Bottle It Up!

“Ever wonder about those people who spend $2 a piece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling ‘Evian’ backward.”

—George Carlin

You know, I think it’s ironic that for someone that doesn’t drink, I really enjoy collecting all sorts of bottles, specially liquor ones. There have been several occasions in which people will look at my shelf where I keep them and say, “Wow, I can’t even imagine what that would look like if you actually drank!” Haha!

Of course, this hobby could get expensive if I were to purchase these bottles new. Luckily for me, most of the bottles in my collection have either been given to me empty, or I’ve found them at garage sales at a fraction of their original cost. If it’s ok with you, I’d like to share some of the ones I find most interesting.

Bottles-1_Lomeli.jpg

The first one is this Caged Cobalt Lomelí bottle from Guadalajara, Mexico. The bronze tin at the bottom almost appears as if it’s trying to contain the blue bubbles, and keep them from bursting. Unfortunately I’m not sure what kind of liquor would go inside, or if it even came with any.

Next is a Penca Azul Tequila bottle. I really love the blue agave plant inside it, as well as the stopper—designed in the form of an already cut up agave. They also have other colors depending on the type of Tequila—it’s fascinating how they can design bottles like this one!

Now this one is quite interesting. I’ve tried doing research before to see what came in this bottle, but I’m yet to find anything. The entire bottle is covered in cork, but cut up in a way to make it look like wood bark. It feels a bit odd when you try to grab it because your mind tells you, “That’s tree bark so it’s going to be rough and hard.” Yet, to the touch it’s actually soft and flexible, just like cork—mind boggling!

This bottle did not actually contain any alcohol. This one my wife got me from a trip she took to Spain. It’s a simple bottle of water, but she knew I’d like it so she saved it and brought it back. I’m surprised it survived the flight—You know those baggage handlers… LOL!

Bottles-5_XXX-Root-Beer.jpg

Funny story about this one. One day I met a friend for dinner. When we came out of the restaurant, apparently someone had dumped a bag of trash on the back of his pickup! When he picked it up, Lo and Behold! This bottle fell out of the trash bag! I just had to have it. It wasn’t even the design or anything, in fact it is quite an ugly bottle! Mainly it’s the name… who in their right mind would name their drink Triple XXX?? And how about that tag line, Makes Thirst a Joy. After some research, it turns out to be an actual brand of Root Beer…Yes, Root Beer!

Bottles-6_Pisco-Porton.jpg

Pisco Portón. I have never heard of “Pisco”, but apparently it’s a sort of Brandy that tastes nothing like Brandy… Maybe one of you out there can explain that one to me, Ha! All I know is that I love the window in the bottle, along with its magnifying effect of the scenery on the other side of the bottle—it’s very inviting!

Bottles-7_Leather.jpg

And last but not least, a round leather covered bottle from Italy. The front of it has some sort of brass rivets at each of the cardinal points. Written in Italian are the words “Nord, Sud, Est, Ovest (North, South, East, West)” at each of their corresponding points, and in the middle there’s a small ship helm. If anyone knows what this is from, I’d love to hear about it!

Thank you for coming by and looking over some of my “interesting” bottles. Do you have any neat and curious bottles you’d like to share? If so, please tell me more about them!
