A Mother's Day Wish

“The Mother’s heart is the Child’s schoolroom.”

—Henry Ward Beecher

Mother’s day is just around the corner! I know everyone out there will say that their mom is the best and I’m sure they are all wonderful ladies. However, this post is not really about who’s mom is the best, rather it’s about honoring the amazing women in our lives whom we proudly call MOM. As such, I would like to share a story with you about the best birthday I’ve ever had.

Growing up, we had very little money. Now I’m not saying this because I want you to feel bad or sorry. I’m merely relating what our financial situation was at the time, so you have a better understanding of what was going on then. Because, in fact, even though money was tight, I can’t say we were poor. I NEVER felt poor because my parents did not put a big emphasis on what we didn’t have. They rather taught me to appreciate what we did have.

Back to my story. At the time, I was around 8 years old and it was my birthday. That particular year, my dad was actually in the hospital because he had to have his gall bladder removed. Back then, such surgery required doctors to open you up from your chest all the way down to your belly button. So you can imagine the recovery time…

Anyway, so my dad was in the hospital, money was tight, and it was my birthday. This meant that my mom could not afford to buy me a cake. Of course, she did what any amazing and loving mother would do, she got a replacement—She went out and got a “Gansito”.

Oh and did I mention we were in Mexico? A “Gansito” is a small pastry they sell down there. Best I can describe it, it’s kind of like a twinkie, that has a cream and strawberry jelly filling inside, and is covered with chocolate and chocolate sprinkles on the outside—it’s quite yummy, especially when it’s cold!

She then proceeded to put a candle on it, and sang “Las Mañanitas” (Spanish “Happy B-Day” song) to me. She made such a big deal out of this event that, even though I wasn’t sure whether she was joking or not, I just went along with it—we clapped, yelled, and laughed, so it was all very fun and exciting! To this day, it remains one of my most treasured memories I have of this amazing woman whom I’m proud to call MY MOM.

And that my friends, has been the best birthday I’ve ever had. Do you have any fond memories of your mom that you’d like to share, I’d love to hear them. And if you don’t feel comfortable sharing them in the comments, you can always email me.

As always, thank you for stopping by. I know your time is precious and so I truly appreciate you spending it here with me. Please give as much love as you can to your moms. Take care and see you back here in two weeks!

As a small bonus, I’d like to leave you with his poem that I wrote to her a few years ago. It was actually inspired by a similar one that a friend wrote to his mom back when I was in high school.

“A Wish”

If only I had a wish, I’d wish for unconditional love,

The kind that doesn’t judge, and is free as a dove.

If only I had a wish, I’d wish for compassion,

The kind that doesn’t reproach, and is full of adoration.

If only I had a wish, I’d wish for courage,

The kind that strengthens the soul, and makes the heart flourish.

If only I had a wish, I’d wish for patience,

The kind that leads the way, since one’s very own innocence.

Now that I think about it, my wish has already been granted,

For a mother gives all of this to her child, from the moment the seed is planted…

…If only I had a wish, I know what I would choose,

And that choice would be, for my mother never to lose.

Poder de siempre tener a mi madre, y a ella nunca perder.

Just one last thing, if you haven’t already, make sure you don’t miss any new posts by signing up below. Take care of yourselves and see you back here in two weeks!
